Le port de Cagliari se trouve au début du golfe de Cagliari, à 3 MN au NW du cap Sant'Elia.
Le golfe de Cagliari est également appelé la "baie des anges" grâce à sa beauté naturelle. Mais ce surnom vient aussi d'une légende locale selon laquelle des anges seraient tombés sous le charme des lieux, mais ils auraient rapidement subi l’attaque de Lucifer et son armée de diablotins. Un combat épique s’ensuivit. Il s’acheva par la déroute du Malin qui, dans sa fuite, perdit la selle de sa monture. Transformée en pierre, celle-ci trône aujourd’hui encore au bout de la longue plage de Poetto.
Le port de Cagliari est le port principal de la Sardaigne en terme de navires et de trafics de passage. Il est constitué du Nouveau Bassin du Levant, du nouveau Bassin du Ponent, du port Interne de Su SIccu, et de celle du Sale.
