The Isle of Wight is an English island in the English Channel five miles from the South Coast of Britain. Popular since Victorian times as a holiday resort, the Isle of Wight is known for its natural beauty and for its world-famous sailing based in Cowes.

L'île est d'une forme massive proche d'un losange régulier de 20 km de côté. Elle a le statut d'un Comté et une population de 134 876 habitants (2002). Sa capitale administrative est Newport. C'est à Cowes au nord que se développent les premières manifestations d'une utilisation de loisir et sportive de la voile. Élisabeth Ire s'y fait construire un bateau de plaisance et en 1815 sous la régence du Prince Régent se crée le Royal Yachting Club. L'île de Wight est célèbre pour les nombreuses régates qui s'y déroulent, et spécialement pour celle qui en 1851 a été à l'origine de la création de la Coupe de l'America
