Hebrides

Les Hébrides sont un archipel du Royaume-Uni situé à l'ouest de l'Écosse. Ces îles sont divisées en deux grands groupes :

• les Hébrides intérieures comprenant notamment les îles de Skye, Mull, Islay, Jura, Iona, les Petites îles et les Slate Islands ;
• les Hébrides extérieures comprenant notamment les îles de Lewis et Harris, Berneray, North Uist, South Uist, Barra et Saint-Kilda.

Les Hébrides sont parfois appelées les Western Isles, terme qui en réalité est plus approprié pour désigner les seules Hébrides extérieures.
Les autres groupes des îles d'Écosse, qu'il ne faut pas inclure dans les Hébrides comme c'est parfois le cas, sont les Shetland, les Orcades et les îles du Firth of Clyde (Arran, Bute, etc.).

The Hebrides (Gaelic: Innse Gall) comprise a widespread and diverse archipelago off the west coast of Scotland, and in geological terms are composed of the oldest rocks in the British Isles. They can be divided into two main groups:

• Inner Hebrides, including Islay, Jura, Skye, Mull, Raasay, Staffa and the Small Isles
• Outer Hebrides, including Barra, Berneray, Harris, Lewis, North Uist, South Uist, and St Kilda

The Hebrides as a whole are sometimes referred to as the Western Isles, but this term is more accurately applied just to the Outer Hebrides, which were once known as The Long Island.
The Hebrides are probably the best-known group of Scottish islands, but other groups include the islands of the Firth of Clyde, Islands of the Forth and the Northern Isles. The islands in the Clyde, especially Arran, are sometimes mistakenly called Hebrides too.
