Descripción

L'île Cocos est une île appartenant à la république du Costa Rica. Elle est classée au patrimoine mondial de l'Unesco depuis 1997. Située à 482,7 kilomètres au Sud-Ouest de celle-ci, elle est rattachée à la province de Puntarenas. Elle était connue pour accueillir les pirates qui y cachaient les trésors pillés aux Espagnols. C'est pourquoi elle est surnommée aujourd'hui l'île au trésor.
C'est la seule île du Pacifique tropical oriental possédant une forêt tropicale humide.
De nos jours, l'île est connue essentiellement pour sa faune et sa flore sous-marine qui sont exceptionnelles, ainsi que pour sa forêt tropicale humide. Depuis 1997, elle fait partie du Patrimoine mondial de l'humanité. http://cocos-island.org Autor: Peter Disch-Lauxmann

Cocos Island (Spanish: Isla del Coco) is an island located off the shore of Costa Rica. Surrounded by deep waters with counter-currents, it is admired by scuba divers for its populations of Hammerhead sharks, rays and dolphins. The island was declared a National Park by means of Executive Decree in 1978. Cocos Island National Park was added to the UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 1997.

In 2002, the World Heritage Site designation was extended to include an expanded marine zone of 1,997 km². The coral reef surrounding Cocos Island are home to many species of fish and has a huge population of many species of sharks.
