Le phare de Fire Island fut éteint en 1974, mais des citoyens s'organisèrent pour créer la "Lighthouse Preservation Society" (Société de préservation du phare). En collaboration avec le "National Park Service" (Service du Parc National), la Société récolte des fonds pour restaurer le phare qui est aujourd'hui un élément du "Fire Island National Seashore" (Littoral national de Fire Island).

The Fire Island Light was extinguished in 1974, but local citizens banded together to form the Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society. Working with the National Park Service, the Society raised funds to restore the Lighthouse, which is today a unit of Fire Island National Seashore.
