The Indira Point Light House is situated at the southern most point of India.
It was hit very badly by Tsunami which followed the earthquake on 26th December, 2004. 17 lives were lost at Indira Point due to the disaster and the 30 meter high G.I. trestle tower, buildings, power house, gensets and vegetation of the lighthouse complex were completely washed away by the tidal waves. The 30 meters tall lighthouse tower is submerged partially in a 3 meter high water column. The Light house Deptt. officers and the Naval staff on board INS Sandhayak took up the challenge of restoring and operationalising the lighthouse and with great effort the task was achieved. Since, the lighthouse is a very important navigational aid for ships on that route restoration of the lighthouse would come as a relief to mariners. Being the lighthouse at the southern most point of India, the lighthouse is also a national pride.
