Tristan da Cunha is a remote volcanic group of islands in the south Atlantic Ocean. It is a dependency of the British overseas territory of Saint Helena, 2,430 kilometres (1,510 mi) to the north.

The territory consists of the main island Tristan da Cunha , the uninhabited Nightingale Islands and the wildlife reserves of Inaccessible Island and Gough Island.

To comply with wildlife conservation measures, visiting vessels are not permitted to anchor overnight off
Gough, Inaccessible or Nightingale Islands.

Tristan da Cunha est une île éloignée des continents, située dans l'archipel du même nom, dans l'océan Atlantique Sud.

C'est une dépendance du territoire britannique d'outre-mer de Sainte-Hélène (Royaume-Uni), située à 2 000 km au sud-sud-est de celle-ci. En 1961, une éruption volcanique sur l'île provoqua le départ des habitants (quelques centaines de personnes), évacués au Royaume-Uni.
La majorité d'entre eux sont revenus sur l'île par la suite, après quelques années. Il est difficile d'accéder à l'île, à cause de son éloignement et de la rareté des bateaux.

L'écrivain Hervé Bazin a raconté le départ, puis le retour, des habitants de Tristan da Cunha dans un récit, Les Bienheureux de la Désolation.
