The Alboran Sea is the westernmost part of the Mediterranean Sea. It's positioned between the continents of Africa and Europe, and the countries of Morocco and Spain. It takes its name from the island of Alborán, located halfway between the cities of Almeria and Melilla (Spanish enclaves on Moroccan soil)

The Strait of Gibraltar, approximately 9 miles (14 km) wide at its narrowest point, is the entry point into the (Alboran Sea) and Mediterranean Sea from the Atlantic Ocean.

Spain's autonomous small cities of Ceuta and Melilla, plus the three small islands of Islas Chafarinas, Penon de Alhucemas, and Penon de Velez de la Gomera, administered directly by the Spanish central government, are all located along the coast of Morocco.

Climate/Current

The wind blows either E or W in the Straits of Gibraltar and this feature will be noticed as far W as Cabo de Gata.
The surface flow in the Mediterranean reaches its peak in the Straits of Gibraltar at up to 2 knots easterly.

La mer d'Alboran est la partie de la mer Méditerranée située la plus à l'ouest. Elle est comprise entre l'Espagne au nord, le Maroc au sud et le détroit de Gibraltar à l'ouest.

Elle tire son nom de l'îlot d'Alborán, situé à mi-chemin entre les villes d'Almeria et de Melilla (enclave espagnole sur le sol marocain).

Le détroit de Gibraltar, large d'environ 9 MN (14 km) à son endroit le plus étroit, est le point d'entrée dans la mer d'Alboran et la limite de la Méditerranée avec l'océan Atlantique.

Ceuta et Melilla, ainsi que 3 petites îles (Chafarinas, Penon de Alhucemas et Penon de Velez de la Gomeras) sont administrées directement par le gouvernement central espagnol et se trouvent le long de la côte marocaine.
