The Atlantic Ocean occupies an elongated, S-shaped basin extending longitudinally between the Americas to the west, and Eurasia and Africa to the east. It is connected in the north to the Arctic Ocean (which is sometimes considered a sea of the Atlantic), to the Pacific Ocean in the southwest, the Indian Ocean in the southeast, and the Southern Ocean in the south. The equator subdivides it into the North Atlantic Ocean and South Atlantic Ocean but for physical purposes the division is rotated slightly counter-clockwise to a line roughly from the Bolama region, Guinea-Bissau to Rio Grande do Norte state, Brazil to include the Gulf of Guinea with the South Atlantic and the north coast of South America with the North Atlantic.

L'océan Atlantique Nord , s'étend de l'Arctique au nord, de la côte orientale de l'Amérique du Nord  et des côtes occidentales de l'Europe et de l'Afrique.

La limite entre l'Atlantique et l'Arctique est arbitrairement fixée par une série de crêtes sous-marines qui s'étend entre les terres de la
Terre de Baffin, du Groenland et de l'Écosse. La limite avec la mer Méditerranée est plus clairement définie par le détroit de Gibraltar et celle avec la mer des Antilles par l'arc des Antilles.
